Our favorite Hot Springs in Bali

Bali is part of the Ring of Fire, a region of the world full of volcanic activity. A benefit of this is that natural hot springs and thermal baths can be found all over the island. We are listing our favorites here.

  • ★ Our Fav!

    1. Lake Batur Hot Springs (Kintamani)

    Near Mount Batur, Central/North-East Bali

Without a doubt the most beautifully located hot springs, directly located next to the spectacular Batur Crater Lake, in the shadow of the Mount Batur Volcano.

There are multiple hot springs you can choose between, they are only a few hundred meters apart. We believe Batur Natural Hot Spring (Google Maps) is the nicest for couples, but Toya Devasya (Google Maps) is a great option too. The latter has some slides and thus attracts a bit more families.

In our view, the best way to enjoy a Batur hot spring is by combining it with a romantic (and relatively easy) Sunrise hike to the top of the Batur Volcano. Linked is a highly rated tour company that offers a package including Hike + Hotspring + Transport from South Bali (they can pick you up in your hotel in Ubud, Seminyak or Canggu).

  • 2. Banjar Hot Springs (Lovina)

    15m drive from Lovina

Also known as Air Panas Banjar, this spring is located roughly 5 kilometers from Lovina in North Bali. These are traditional Balinese termal baths. The local population believes that the natural hot water from this spring has a healing power.

On the way to this hot spring, you will pass through various traditional Balinese villages. Visit the hot springs for a relaxed and refreshing dip and allow the natural hot water to help soothe your nerves. Do note this hot spring can get crowded as many locals like to frequent it, especially in the weekends.

  • 3. Go private at Penatahan Hot Springs (Tabanan)

North of Tabanan, 1hr from Canggu and Ubud.

A hot spring mostly frequented by locals, a bit off the beaten path. However it's great for couples on a honeymoon or on a date as they offer private hot spring pools which you can rent affordably by the hour. As far as we know it's the only hot spring in Bali that offers such private pools.

When we visited there was no need to book in advance. We just had to wait 20 minutes for our private pool to be ready, and there is a large heated public pool as well. but to be sure it might be worth reaching out to them in advance through Whatsapp: +6285100540851.

Great as a day trip from Canggu or Ubud (around 1 hour drive from both). It could be combined with a visit to the beautiful Jatiluwih Rice Terraces which are about 30 minutes further up north.

The best Saunas for couples in Bali

While above hot springs are all fairly traditional, embedded in the Balinese culture, nowadays more modern wellness can be enjoyed on the island of Bali too. We love to visit Finnish-inspired saunas, and there are many options to choose from depending on the region you are visiting.

Some people ask us if Bali isn’t too hot to enjoy a sauna. All of the saunas listed below offer cold baths to cool down as well, and honestly we always feel super refreshed after visiting one. Give it a try! Our two favorites are the extravagant Istana in Uluwatu and the beautiful and modest Tjampuhan Spa in Ubud. Let us tell you why we love them!

  • ★ Our Fav!

    4. Istana Spa & Sunset (Uluwatu)

    Uluwatu

Our favorite sauna in all of Bali. When we were living in Canggu we would sometimes drive the whole 1.5 hour way down to Uluwatu just to enjoy an afternoon of relaxation here. Book this place in advance, you won't regret it.

On Uluwatu cliff overlooking the Indian ocean, this sauna offers cold baths, steam rooms, two sauna's and large swimming pools. As it's facing east, you will be able to enjoy the most spectacular sunset from this place if you book the evening timeslot. Usually after sunset, the staff will light a bonfire, giving this place magical vibes.

    5. Tjampuhan Sauna (Ubud)

    Central Ubud

The day spa at the Tjampuhan Hotel is a real hidden gem. While we were living in Ubud, we would go here almost every week... Positioned in a cave overlooking the river valley, the sauna complex has an air of mystery and might be our favorite romantic experience in Ubud. You can use the hot and cold whirlpool baths, a sauna, and a steam room. Enjoy the stone carvings around you while hearing the sounds of the river and jungle in the background. It is possible to walk all the way down to the river and take a shower under a natural waterfall. On top of that, they offer massages too!

TIP: Tjampuhan Spa is located at the start of the famous Campuhan ridge walk. Why not reward you and your partner with a Spa after walking the Campuhan trail?

  • 6. Bali Dacha (near Ubud)

    30min east of Ubud

Unique Experience. A Balinese style wooden building in the middle of the jungle, turned into a traditional Russian style sauna. This place is mostly frequented by Russians visiting Bali, but everyone is welcome.

They have multiple sauna's and baths, and you can even join traditional tea ceremonies - all of it overlooking a beautiful jungle. Check their Instagram for the latest events, as they often host special nights.

  • 7. Soham Wellness Center (Seminyak)

    Seminyak

Modern wellness center in Seminyak, but quite close from Canggu too. This place has a (small) sauna on the top floor with a cold bath, as well as extensive gym facilities and an outdoor rooftop pool. They do offer day passes. Great place to visit for a healthy afternoon during your honeymoon.

  • 8. Udara Sauna (Canggu)

    Seseh Beach, 20min from Canggu.

Right on Seseh Beach roughly 20 minutes drive from Canggu. They have a beautiful modern sauna and baths, all overlooking the Indian Ocean. The place is decorated beautifully, creating a peaceful and inspiring vibe. Udara's rooftop Yoga classes are famous!

  • 9. Amo Spa & Health Club (Canggu)

    Central Canggu

Amo Spa is the favorite place of many Canggu influencers - you may have seen their ice cold plunge pools in photos on Instagram or videos on Youtube. This health club is located right in the center of Canggu. It offers hot tubs, a sauna, cold baths and a pool. Its also a great place for a massage or multiple types of treatment. We recommend this place if you feel like escaping the buzz of Canggu for a little while.

  • 10. Dragonfly Spa (Ubud)

    Walking distance from Ubud

Unique experience between the ricefields north of Ubud. Getting to this place is an adventure in itself. You will need to walk a small path from town, not suitable for cars but with beautiful views along the way.

This herbal steam sauna is not as fancy or luxurious as some of our other listings. It is however a very unique and authentic experience, almost spiritual and very much what you would expect in Ubud. Alongside the herbal steam sauna they offer a salt water pool as well. It's a bit off the beaten path, but worth visiting during your honeymoon if you're in for a unique experience!

  • 11. Svaha Spa (North Ubud & Others)

    30m north of Ubud

We visited the Svaha Spa in Ubud as well as the Svaha Spa in Sanur. This review is of the Svaha Spa Ubud, check out our review of the Svaha Spa Sanur in our Seascape Sanur article.

Not a sauna, but a great wellness option for couples staying in Ubud and looking for a romantic experience with a couples massage and flower bath. Svaha Spa Kenderan, part of the 5-star Aksari resort, is an absolutele bliss! We experienced the tropical package for couples, where we were being massaged next to each other with a beautiful setting of tropical lush forest and sounds of a river flowing in the distance. When we arrived in the Spa lobby we were handed an healthy ginger shot and a cold towel. We were then given a sample of all the different oil scents to choose, something we had not experienced in a spa before. We were then escorted to the spa area passing through a beautifully decorated pond with three swans hanging out peacefully.

The session started with a cleansing and foot bath where our feet were filled with warm water mixed with flowers, sea salt, and lemon. Massages were done very professionally and both masseuses were very attentive to our wishes yet very friendly. Afterwards, we had a flower bath to ourselves. During the flower bath, we were offered a refreshing rosella tea with some addictive ginger candies. Showering in the private facilities afterwards is such a pleasant experience as the amenities are complete including shampoos, conditioner, shower gel, and body lotion, all with a very Balinese scent.

Balinese Massages

Balinese massages are a great experience for couples as they provide a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience that can be shared together. The combination of long strokes, acupressure, and aromatherapy used in Balinese massage can help to release tension and improve circulation, leaving both partners feeling refreshed and energized. Additionally, the peaceful and serene atmosphere of a Balinese spa can provide a tranquil setting for couples to unwind and reconnect with each other.

Most of the spas and saunas listed above offer massages as well. But you will be able to find massages literally all over the island. They are usually relatively expensive when booked directly in your hotel, so we would recommend checking highly rated massage shops or small spas in the area your stay. This way, you also directly support the local population.
