Why Honeymoon in Canggu?
Canggu is the most hip and up-and-coming location on the island of Bali. Not too long ago, only surfers knew about this black sand beach village. In a few years, it has become the most popular destination for a hip, young crowd of digital nomads and surfers - and it’s definitely not a small village anymore. Canggu has an amazing food culture, is a great place to learn and improve your surfing skills and perfect for boutique shopping. If you would like to have a party during your honeymoon in Canggu, or visit a beach club with your partner, the options here are endless!
Explore Canggu
The two main areas in Canggu are Batu Bolong and Berawa. Batu Bolong is the most popular place to stay for visitors. It has the most beach clubs and restaurants. The black sand Batu Bolong Beach is the best for surfing. Here you can watch surfers or try to catch some waves together with your partner. If you are new to surfing this is a great place to start? Some parts of Batu Bolong beach offer gentle waves that are great for beginner surfers, and most board rental shops offer lessons. For more advanced surfing try Echo Beach, just a few hundred meters further northwest.
Why not take it easy for a day on your Canggu honeymoon? The Lawn (Batu Bolong Beach) and La Brisa (Echo Beach) are two great beach clubs to relax together overlooking the Indian Ocean. At the Lawn you have a great view of the waves and it is a great spot to watch the sunset. At the lovely styled La Brisa, you’ll find simple Spanish food, tasty cocktails, palm trees swaying, and a hot soundtrack that plays well with the sound of the waves in the background. If you are staying on the Berawa side of Canggu, a fancy beach club to consider visiting is Finns. Check out our favorite beach clubs in Bali here if you need more suggestions ;-).
After midnight, visit the party at Sand Bar to experience the ultimate Canggu vibes with your partner. A simple wooden shed on Batu Bolong Beach that sells drinks during the day, turns into a spectacular beach party after midnight. Imagine partying barefoot on the beach, feeling a cool breeze and hearing waves smashing against the rocks.
As you drive around Canggu, you will see many restaurants offering great healthy food. Canggu is all about conscious and healthy living, which is why many expats and digital nomads love Canggu. Crate Cafe is a Canggu favorite with industrial-chic interiors, bold murals, and great affordable lunch options. It’s on a quiet lane just off Batu Bolong, but the place can get crowded (you might need to wait in line for a seat).
Canggu is also the only place on the island with a craft beer culture. If you and your partner love high quality craft beers, visiting Black Sand Brewery is a great idea!
Most roads in Bali run north to south. A result of the ridges running in that direction due to the volcanic nature of Bali. Going from Batu Bolong to Berawa is therefore not super easy. To get to the Berawa area from Batu Bolong, you can drive or walk through the rice fields on a narrow shortcut. There is a 15-minute detour that cars have to take because they can’t use the shortcut. This part of Bali is a little quieter, but it has a lot of great restaurants and is an excellent place to stay if you want to combine Canggu with Seminyak.
In both Batu Bolong and Berawa, there are markets and boutique stores that are great places for shopping. Canggu is a very fashionable place - people are very conscious of the way they look and dress. It explains why there are so many great boutique stores around town.
We want to end with a little warning. Canggu has been growing a lot in the last few years, and it’s one of the most crowded places on the island. There used to be a lot of rice fields near Canggu, but the area is urbanizing fast. We love Canggu, but think it’s important to know what to expect. Old articles online talk about Canggu being a little fishing town - those days are over!
Honeymoon Hotels in Canggu
Canggu has excellent luxury resorts and romantic hotel options suitable for a honeymoon, which are more reasonably priced than the most fancy hotels in Seminyak. We recommend staying near the beach, either in the Batu Bolong neighborhood, which is the most lively, or in the Berawa area, which is a little quieter and conveniently positioned between Canggu and Seminyak.
If you don’t like moving around, Canggu can be a great base for your holiday. It is possible to explore the rest of the island through day-trips starting and ending in your Canggu Hotel.

Hotel Tugu Bali
5 starAffordable luxuryBeachfrontBatu Bolong Beach, CangguWe live in Canggu, but this is where we would stay if we were visiting for a few days. Romantic and authentic hotel at the best possible location in Canggu: exactly where the main street Batu Bolong reaches the ocean. You can see and hear the waves crashing onto Batu Bolong beach. While this hotel is at the center of everything that's going on in Canggu, it somehow feels like a calm oasis due to its lush garden, waterlily pond and authentic wooden architecture. That is the promise of the 5-star boutique Suenyo Eco Retreat. Read our full review, as we were able to stay in one of their 5 spectacular private bamboo "Paviljons" with private pool and bathtub overlooking a jungle river. Our Pavilion featured spectacular bamboo architecture, unobstructed jungle river views, a private infinity pool and riverside bathtub.
There are many positive things to say about this place. We recommend trying the food here, while its a very small resort (5 rooms only) they clearly spent a lot of effort on perfecting their menu with unique twists on traditional Indonesian dishes. You can have a Balinese massage as a couple at a calm spot next to the river. And if you get bored, Canggu and Tanah Lot are only a short drive away (you do have to climb a bunch of stairs out of the valley to get back to the reception though!).

Their lofts and villas feature private pools and even jacuzzi's. Astera's infinity pool overlooks some pristine rice terraces, which is quite unique in the more and more developing town of Canggu. With a Spa and two restaurants on site, as well as a romantic honeymoon package, you won't go wrong here. Do note that the Astera is a bit further from the beach, roughly 5 minutes by taxi or motorbike, but the street it is on is quite booming: many restaurants have opened up nearby in the past two years.

Ametis Villas
5 starSplurgePrivate villasCangguOn the expensive side, but a great option for couples who want to be right in the bustle of Canggu, but still be able to retreat to a beautiful secluded private pool villa. Ametis is really central, a 2 minute walk from the most popular beach in Canggu: Batu Bolong. Great for surfing couples, or those who would like to learn to surf. At night this beach turns into a party area, so Ametis is a great spot too for those who would like to walk home after exploring the famous Canggu nightlife. The downside is that you might still hear some party noice even in your private villa.
The four villas offered by Ametis all have a private pool and garden, and their own private butler! You can experience private dining in your own villa, however there are also many great restaurants in walking distance around Canggu.

You will be visiting a beautiful waterfall which is great for swimming (Tegenungan Waterfall), the scenic Blue Lagoon beach famous for snorkling (but also known for the monkeys roaming around), and a hidden canyon through which a river flows.
At the canyon, you will participate in canyoning activities, and at the Blue Lagoon Beach you will have the opportunity to snorkel with gear provided. Munduk & Bedugul Day Trip from Canggu
NatureCultureDaytripPrivate tourPick-up in your Canggu HotelUlan Danu Temple is the first picture that shows up if you Google Bali. It might be the most iconic sight on the island, situated against Lake Beratan in the Bedugul region of Bali. But this region has more to offer than just the temple, and this PRIVATE TOUR is a great way to explore it!
The Bedugul region can easily be spotted on any map: it's where you see the 3 lakes towards the north of the island. These lakes are part of a massive volcanic crater region at high altitudes. This results in very distinct vegetation and a much cooler climate than you will find in most of Bali. A great place to escape the heath!
One stop during this tour is the Handara Gate, which is a great spot for memorable Bali Honeymoon pictures. The pretty Banyumala Twin Waterfalls are next, there is opportunity to swim at these.
Finally this tour will stop at a very romantic spot: an amazing viewpoint on the ridge of the crater from where you can see two lakes at once. We love this area a lot, and would even recommend you staying here for a few days (see our Munduk Honeymoon Guide), but this tour is also a great way to get to know the area!

Finns Beach Club
BeachClubBerawa near CangguFinns claims to be the "world's best beach club". It definitely is the best beach club in Bali if you are looking to celebrate and party. Finns, strategically located on Berawa beach between Canggu and Seminyak, is one of the most well known beach clubs in Bali. You can join a beach party at Finns 365 days a year.
Finns is great for those who like to party: DJs are playing even during the day, they always have performers like dancers and musicians playing. It feels like a party well before sunset. It also means it might not be the best fit if you are looking for a calm romantic experience.
Beyond party and performances, we like to simply watch the surf from one of the infinity pools at Finns. The food is very good too and fairly priced for a beach club. You can order multiple cuisines from the comfort of your day-bed, including Japanese, Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Indian and Indonesian.
Due to its popularity, Finns expanded a lot lately. While they still have the original beach club with bamboo bar and ocean-facing pool, there now are new Finns VIP and Finns Beach Party areas. These are more spacious and feel more premium.
Finns is popular, and can sometimes get very crowded. Definitely book your sunbeds in advance. They require a minimum spend amount. The Beach Party area is the most crowded and lively, which is part of the charm of Finns, but the VIP Area might be a good choice if you like a little more personal space.

Shopping around Canggu
ShoppingBatu Bolong Street, CangguBelieve us when we say that shopping in Canggu is great! As Canggu is very fashion-conscious, many unique boutique shops have popped up all over Canggu. Jalan Batu Bolong, the main street from Batu Bolong beach inland, is home to some of the greatest fashion boutiques in the area. Many Home Decoration shops and art shops can be found as well. In addition, Canggu offers a souvenir and art market.

La Brisa Beach Club
BeachClubCangguLa Brisa is hard to describe as its a very unique place. Its a bunch of simple wooden buildings surrounded by palm trees and with a pool in between. But somehow it all fits perfectly together, making it our favorite spot to hang out in Canggu, especially as the sun is setting. Food here is excellent as well, we love their poke bowl.
The amount of sunbeds and relaxed seating options here is limited compared to some of the other beach clubs. They have a lot of bean bags on the beach but they fill up fast. In any case, it is a very nice place to escape from the bustle of Canggu for a few hours - especially during sunset times.

Explore Canggu Nightlife
ClubNightlifeAll around CangguCanggu has some of the best nightlife globally, with beach bars, clubs, and chic destinations scattered around the coastal area. In Canggu, many of the most excellent venues to go out at night are practically right on the beach, making them popular with surfers seeking cold drinks, tasty meals, and great music. Even more wonderful are the expansive seascapes and stunning sunsets that accompany them.
For honeymooners looking to enjoy Canggu's nightlife, we have many recommendations, depending on your taste: The Lawn for beachfront clubbing, Green Door and Shady Pig for fancy indoor clubs, Black Sand Brewery for craft beers, DEUS Ex Machina for live music, and Sand Bar for cocktails on the beach after midnight.

Romantic Dining in Canggu
The food culture in Canggu is amazing! Canggu is known for it’s “hipster” healthy food - but there’s great options for anyone’s taste. Here’s our favorite romantic restaurants that could be a great visit for your honeymoon in Canggu:

★ Our Fav!
JI Restaurant
Casual diningViewpointJapaneseBatu Bolong Beach, CangguGreat viewpoint for sunset, where you can overlook the surfers catching the last waves of the day. We had really decent sushi here (try the "Tic Tac Toe" Chef Signature nigiris) and enjoyed creative mocktails, but the cocktails are supposed to be great too. The Green Tea Cheesecake is a worthy dessert to wrap up the dinner, and large enough for sharing. For the best experience book two ocean-view seats on the top floor in advance. We suggest reserving for 5:30PM as that allows you to enjoy your dinner during sunset.

★ Our Fav!
Sa'Mesa Canggu
Casual diningItalianJl Tanah Barak streetThe happiest dinner experience in Bali. During your honeymoon, you probably prefer having dinner in a private most of the time. Sa'mesa is completely different. Here, you are seated at a large table with strangers who may become your friends by the end of the night!
Due to popularity, Sa'Mesa now has two branches: one in Canggu and one in Seminyak. The popularity is understandable, as this restaurant offers amazing value. An 18-meal(!) Italian home-cooked dinner experience is served. This isn't fine dining, but it is a unique tasting menu sharing experience that is worth being part of. We loved the Burrata, home-baked breads and fresh fish. To add to the experience, unlimited limoncello liquor is served for free. You can imagine the vibes by the end of the night after many shots of limoncello, it feels like one big celebration!
18-Course sharing dinner: roughly 38$ pp.

Casa Tua
Local favoritesIndonesianBatu Bolong, CangguCasa Tua is a cozy place where you can get unique but non-pretentious Indonesian food in a romantic old wooden house. When you're having lunch or dinner, you can enjoy a lovely setting while you explore the Indonesian cuisine.
-
Crate Cafe
Breakfast & lunchBatu Bolong, CangguThe place to be in Bali, especially for brunch or lunch. You can't reserve here, so expect some queuing during busy hours to order your food. Crate serves affordable and healthy food in large portions, so no wonder why its so popular. The crowds visiting Crate are very trendy, but apart from the art on the walls its a very simple place: you'll probably be seated on a literal crate or simple stool.
-
Indigo
Fine diningJapaneseBerawa, CangguOn the other side of the Canggu shortcut, in Berawa, you will find a great place for high-end Sushi. Its a 20-minute drive from Batu Bolong, but by car this can take a bit longer sometimes if there is a lot of traffic. But its worth the effort heading here!
Chef Morita Shigehiko worked at the first Michelin-star restaurant in Kyoto before opening Indigo. He describes his food as "innovative with a traditional approach".
Indigo does not have a set tasting menu, but they do have great à la carte options instead. When we visited we got the "new style" salmon sashimi as well as the Signature Sushi Set (order this twice, one for each of you). You'll probably want to try some more dishes after enjoying these dishes. Lovers of steak might try the actual Miyazaki Wagyu.
How to get to Canggu
It only takes one hour to get to Canggu by taxi from the airport, however this might be slightly longer due to traffic. Being quite close to the airport, Canggu serves as an excellent beginning point or ending destination for your honeymoon. It is easiest to schedule a taxi transfer with your hotel or make a reservation in advance (slightly cheaper than most hotel transfers). On the other hand, if you arrange a taxi on the spot at the airport, you will almost always be charged more money.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Canggu?
Canggu is located on Bali's west coast in Indonesia, approximately one hour drive from the airport. It's a bit further up from Seminyak.
How to get around in Canggu?
If you stay near Batu Bolong beach, you may walk. Renting a motorbike is the best way to get around, but traffic can be crazy. It's not the best place to learn! Taxis are cheap and easy to find all over.
How far is Canggu from Bali Airport?
By driving, it will take approximately one hour, but due to traffic this can take longer sometimes. If you need to catch an international flight, make sure to leave in time. It's most cost-effective to book a taxi in advance.
Is Canggu a good Honeymoon destination?
It’s the most popular area in Bali right now. If you don't mind the crowds, you can have a great time in this place. It could be a great starting point to explore less discovered parts of the island through day-trips.
How long should we stay in Canggu?
We suggest you staying for two to three nights. Alternatively, consider making it your base and do some day tours to the rest of the island from Canggu. In that case you can stay longer!
Next destinations
If you’re looking for more (advanced) surf, are done with black sand, and want to see some stunning cliffs, head south to Uluwatu, a 1.5-hour drive south. Enough beach, fancy some jungle vibes? Proceed to Ubud, which is about an hour north.
Are you looking to get away from the crowds? Make your way to Nusa Penida Island or the off the beaten path island of Lombok. Getting to Sanur harbour to catch a ferry to Nusa Penida takes 45 minutes. Even calmer: the tranquil Bali dive town of Amed, which is about a three-hour drive north. Want to swim with dolphins on your honeymoon? Consider lodging at Lovina, which is around a three-hour journey north.

Hi! We have put together this guide with a lot of care, based on our own experiences. As a couple, we have lived in Bali for the past 5 years, and we fell in love with the island. We have visited every corner of Bali, especially the romantic places ;-). While our articles do contain affiliate links, you can trust us to recommend only the experiences that we love.
