Nature or town? The best of both worlds!
If you visit Ubud, normally you would have to make a choice. Do you want to stay in the lively town, or a bit further out in the nature? The boutique 5-star Kaamala Resort provides the best of both worlds. Its entrance is located in the central Bisma Street, only 10 minutes walk from the Monkey Forest. But the boutique hotel is actually situated between rice fields, and the infinity pool and Habitat Bistro Restaurants overlook the jungle valley surrounding the Tukad Wos River.
Our Grand Ricefield Private Pool Villa
For those fancying a villa with private pool, the Kaamala Resort has two options. We stayed in a Grand Ricefield View Private Pool Villa, but there is a slightly smaller villa with similar amenities too. Our Grand One Bedroom villa measured 110 square meters, very spacious! We had a massive infinity private pool overlooking the rice paddies.
Upon entering, our bed and the large bathtub were decorated with flowers. This is part of their Honeymoon Package, which also included a couple massage and romantic private dinner (more on those later).
The Grand One Bedroom Private Pool Villa really has everything you’ll need. We really enjoyed our stay here. Everything feels very new and modern, and is designed with care.
You won’t get bored here!
The Kaamala offers a lot of activities. On some days of the week there are yoga classes, unfortunately that did not align with the mornings that we were there. They also have workshops like cocktail making. However we did experience a Floating Sound Healing Ceremony in our private pool villa - very Ubudian! It was our first time experiencing this, and it was very relaxing. A Healer was playing vibrating music on traditional instruments while we floated on the water. The supposed effects of this are to clear your mind and balance your energy.
There is a small gym in the hotel as well. We have to mention the Seven Paintings restaurant too. A fun interactive dining experience. Each dish from the seven-course menu was inspired by iconic artists from the past and present, from Michelangelo to Banksy.
Apart from the on-site activities, the fact that Kaamala is in walking distance of the lively Ubud town and the monkey forest means you will never get bored here.
Couple Massage at the Svaha Spa
We had a 60-minute couple massage as well as a 30 minute lava scrub at the Svaha Spa. If you book the Honeymoon Package at the Kaamala, it will include such a massage. The moment we walked into the Svaha Spa, we enjoyed the calmness of the space from the warmth of the interior, the aromatic scents, and the welcoming gestures of the staff.
We were provided with a refreshing welcome drink and a wet towel while we chose our favorite oils. The massage was really good, quite strong (but you can choose the strength of your massage). The lava stone mud scrub felt good but obviously made us very muddy - fortunately the shower in the massage room had all amenities to get clean again. Afterwards we received a warm ginger tea.
For couples that like to hit refresh and indulge in some serious self-care, maybe after a long flight or long day exploring, this place is for you! The Svaha Spa can be booked by guests and others, and is good value for a hotel spa in Bali.
Three great restaurants!
Didn’t we say this is a boutique hotel? It kind of is, but they do have 3 distinct restaurants, and each welcomes outside guests too:
- Shichirin (website), our favorite, a Japanese Teppanyaki restauraunt located on Bisma street just in front of the hotel.
- Habitat Bistro (website), overlooking the infinity pool. Mostly Italian food. Great for sunset drinks. If you book a candle-light dinner, the food will also come from this kitchen.
- Seven Paintings (website), a unique interactive dining experience themed around arts and creativity.
Shichirin
Our favorite restaurant at the Kaamala, located in front of the hotel on Bisma street. Stepping into this place feels like walking into a restaurant in Japan. It is a pretty small place, making it a cozy experience. The seating is facing the area where the chefs prepare all the food.
Definitely try the scallops and Wagyu steak. Both were prepared right in front of us, with some fire involved, which was a spectacle on its own. The staff here was super friendly and chatty. While we visited for lunch and it was not so busy, we heard that it does get quite busy in the evening, especially with outside guests, so it might be worth reserving your seats. We recommend getting seats at the bar area so you can see the chefs at work.
Habitat Bistro
Even if you are not staying in the Kaamala Resort, consider having some drinks at Habitat Bistro for sunset! During our stay we had dinner here once, but we also enjoyed the food during our candle-light dinner. Our favorite dishes include the grilled duck breast, tomato burata, and meringue dessert. If you are craving some Asian food, they also have a Kung Pao Chicken on the menu that is delicious.
Habitat Bistro is also where the a-la-carte breakfast is served, unless you opt for the floating breakfast ;-). The staff was super generous with coffee refills, extra bread and smoothy shots.
Seven Paintings
Fun interactive dining experience for creative couples. Located in a dark room where the lighting and video projections immediately grab the attention. You feel like you are in the middle of a movie. Each dish from the seven-course menu was inspired by iconic artists from the past and present. From Michelangelo to Banksy, Picasso to Pollock, and finally, Van Gogh’s Starry Night Chocolate Bar, every course was a sensory delight. Each plate came with a surprise—whether it was crafting our own drinks, making art on our plates, engaging with interactive 3D visuals, or enjoying our dinner with jazz music.
While the food here does not meet the levels of some of the best fine dining restaurants in Bali, it was a really fun experience, and priced very fairly. By the end of the night, we were not only full but inspired by all the arts and creative expressions that accompanied the food. This isn’t just a dinner; it’s a place where creativity, art, and a culinary experience satisfied all our senses. If you’re looking for a truly unique and artsy dining experience in Bali, consider checking out Seven Paintings!
Conclusion
If you are a couple on a honeymoon in Bali, consider the Kaamala Resort! Great location overlooking nature but close to town, super friendly staff, multiple restaurants to choose from.
